Once-a-year opportunity to dispose of hazardous waste in your home

Bridgeport residents who have been trying to figure out where to get rid of their household hazardous waste will have the opportunity to participate in a free collection on Saturday, Nov. 4.

The collection, which happens just once a year and is only open to city residents, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Blackham School, 425 Thorne St.

There is a lengthy list of items being accepted, as well as items that will not be taken.

Garage/workshop items accepted

-Antifreeze

-Household batteries

-Brake Fluid

-Gasoline

-Oil-based paints

-Paint stripper/thinner

-Transmission fluid

-Turpentine

Yard/hobby items accepted

-Adhesives/glues

-Artist’s paints

-Charcoal lighter fluid

-Cleaning solvents

-Epoxy products

-Fungicides

-Herbicides/insecticides

-Kerosene

-Moth balls

-Pool chemicals

Kitchen items accepted

-Aerosols (unfinished)

Disinfectants

-Drain cleaner

-Floor care products

-Oven cleaners

-Polishers

-Spot/stain removers

-Wood preservatives

Electronics accepted

-Laptops

-Computers

-Monitors

-Televisions

-VCR/DVD players

Not accepted

-Ammunition (contact local police)

-Explosives (contact local police/fire)

-Fire extinguishers (contact local police/fire)

-Flares (contact local police/fire)

-Tires (contact Public Facilities)

-Biological waste (contact a contractor)

-Needles/syringes (can be disposed in regular garbage in a heavy plastic container/closed coffee can)

-Medicine/drugs (contact local hospital/walk-in clinic)
